I think you should seriously look at the Fluid Synergy. It is a double plastic kayak, that can easily be paddled by one person or two and have the capacity to accomodate a 3rd smaller child in the centre seat. Two of them easily fit on a customised roof rack. I have paddled mine in the surf and extensively on rivers, alone and with my son and they handle great. They are rated up to a 2 or 3 for rapids as well. In the sea they are not as fast as the fibre ski's but thet are super stable and with the tri-hull they handle the surf launches and beaching rather well.

The Locomotion is Fluid’s answer to that old, old question – single or double?

Thanks to an innovative design it is as easy as 1,2,3 to extend the single sit-on-top to a double or

even a triple seated kayak. The stern is formed to match the bow of the next kayak exactly, and

two slots on the sides ensure a tight fit so that the two kayaks are linked together like, well, a

locomotive. For a more secure attachment of linking the boats, a tie down (supplied with the boats)

is used to strap them together. The rear end is specifically designed to enable the kayak to stand

upright on its own, and the kayaks also nest neatly on top of each other for optimal use of transport

and storage space. The scoop at the stern where the rear kayak slots in is fitted with a removable,

handy basket, ideal to serve as a picnic basket or cooler box keeper.
